History:
Charles Green Rhodes created the plan to dredge parallel canals and use the fill to create habitable areas between them. You can see this same theme in Venice, Italy, which earned Fort Lauderdale the nickname, "Venice of America."
Next came the railroad and the exchange of trade and people that brought. The city was incorporated in 1911.
Becoming famous for its sun and beaches brought hordes of students on spring break, made famous in th e1960s with the Connie Francis' song "The Strip" and the beach-party movie "Where The Boys Are"
Peaking at over 350,00 wild revelers, the city soon decided that they'd have to discourage such wildness to please rich property owners, usually of a much more sedate age.
Since the 1990's has transformed Fort Lauderdale into a cosmopolitan destination. Today Fort Lauderdale offers championship golfing, world class dining, performing arts and a rich cultural environment, and plenty to do for vacationers looking for a little more.
