Lighthouse from bottomSummary:
As one of the oldest European communities in North America, St. Augustine has long been dependent on the ocean. A watchtower was built by the Spanish here in the 1500s, this was later converted to a lighthouse in 1824.

The original lighthouse fell victim to erosion. This tower was built on safer ground and was completed in 1874.

The St. Augustine Lighthouse rises 165 feet above sea level and contains 219 steps. At the top, a first order Fresnel lens serves the beacon. The St. Augustine lens consists of 370 hand-cut glass prisms arranged in a beehive shape towering twelve feet tall and six feet in diameter.

As in many of these historical sites, the tireless efforts of many volunteers was required to prepare this site for the many visitors that come through here every year. In 1980, the Junior Service League of St. Augustine, Inc. began a fifteen-year campaign to restore the keeper's house.
